Flatbush is a neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York City with an incredible history. The neighborhood has a population of about 110,000 people from all ethnic backgrounds, including communities of Jamaicans, Caribbeans, Pakistanis, African Americans, and Latinos. Well known for its business sector, Flatbush is also home to a number of cultural and educational institutions, including the Brooklyn Museum, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, and Brooklyn College.
It was first settled by the Dutch in 1651 as one of the six original townships in Brooklyn. The area was farmland until the late nineteenth century when it underwent a rapid period of urbanization. The neighborhood has since become home to a large number of immigrants from all over the world, giving it a truly unique and cosmopolitan character.
